Why I Chose a Pet Urn to Honor My Dog

Trooper was more than my dog—he was my best friend when I was a young woman and then later on in life, he became a trusted guardian to me and my children. He gave us all unconditional love for nearly fifteen years, until old age and kidney failure took his life. My grief over losing my beautiful German Shepard was nearly impossible to bear, and when he passed away quietly in his sleep, I couldn’t bear to think about having his body disposed of in some landfill. After my vet offered his condolences, he let me know about another option for Trooper, and that was to have him cremated so that I could place his ashes in a pet urn.

At first, the idea of cremating Trooper frightened me, but the more I thought about, the more I understood that it was a better option than burial. The city wouldn’t let me bury him on our property like I had planned because they said it might contaminate the soil, and after looking into burials at a nearby pet cemetery, I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford that, especially considering Trooper’s final medical bills. My vet gave me the address to a Web site that showed me all of the options that I had when it came to buying an urn for Trooper, and I was pleasantly surprised at all of the shapes and sizes that were available. I allowed my children to help me to choose an urn, and this helped us all with the grieving process. After a bit of consideration, we chose a beautiful and affordable wooden photo urn that allowed me to display several pictures of Trooper on it so that we can now remember him like he used to be—young, vibrant, and healthy. Choosing cremation and an urn for Trooper was the best decision I ever made because even though he’s passed on, he’s still always with us.
